The days of thinking of Web urls with .com, .org, .net, and the other common generic top-level domain (gTLD) endings are quickly coming to a close. ICANN, of course, made its historic announcement to expand the gTLD program last year, and on June 13, it plans to begin revealing the applications for the nearly 2,000 applications for the new domain ending hopefuls.

WebProNews has covered the expansion program extensively and particularly why many advertisers and marketers are against it. However, there are companies that are very supportive of the initiative and believe that it will be beneficial to the Internet as a whole.

One such company is Donuts Inc. The company launched recently as a domain registry that hopes to expand the Internet naming space with the 307 gTLD applications it has requested. Mason Cole, the company’s Vice President of Communications and Industry Relations, told us that the Internet is “way overdue” for growth in the naming space.

According to him, the market is currently limiting individuals, companies, products, and others in finding an identity on the Web. He and Donuts Inc. believe that ICANN’s expansion program will solve this problem.

Donuts Inc. has brought in more than $100 million in funding to help secure and operate each applied-for TLD. Cole said the company would raise more capital if necessary.
